Characters: Who are the main characters that we meet in this part of the book? What did you learn about them?Malcolm is the main character. He is about 15 years old. He is Luvenia Lewis' aunt. He's a musician--a connection to the Harlem Renaissance. He's a good person and student. He is responsible because he makes arrangements for his cousin to go to the Lewis Family Reunion in Curry Island.

Setting: What is the historical significance of when and where this chapter takes place? It is connected to the Harlem Renaissance.


Plot: What happened in the chapter? Summarize the events.Malcolm and his cousin had to go to Curry Island. They took a bus, but when they were at a rest stop, they missed the bus. Then, they got a ride on a truck. It was very hard to breath in the truck. They walked the rest of the way. They arrive at The Glory Field. Malcolm works in the field with Planter--a very old man-- for long hours until he was out of energy. After Planter dies, Malcolm inherits the shackles used by Muhammed. The shackles represent the family history and their struggle for freedom. Passing on the shackles shows passing on of the family history and experience.

Analysis: Why is this section of the book important? How does it connect or relate to the previous sections? This section connects all of the previous sections together. This section is important because in this chapter author compared the diference between past and present of black's life. It is also important because every experience that Malcom has in this section is like the experience the whole Lewis family have before.
